Week Wrapup

Total Distance: 17.75 kilometers (11 miles)
Total Time: 2.5 hours

Comments: Only one run for the week but it was a doozy. This is probably my first "real" training week. I will start trying to aim for specific races in my workouts from now on rather than just run to get in shape enough to survive.

To keep up with these new goals I will start having these end-of-the week wrapups to look at my progress and my general impressions of the previous seven days. Most training schedules I have found like to track weekly mileage so this is a good way to do that as well. Also, I am not counting the treadmill miles but I will count the time.

The pain in my foot after my big run had me pretty worried this week. I iced it three times a day and relaced my shoes to fit more firmly (not necessarily tighter) than they had been. I also took the extra day off as a precaution. It seems to be fine now but I will be careful about it for some time to come.

And to be completely honest, I took the extra day off because it was clear the two-hour jaunt took a lot more out of me than I first thought. I really was sore after this one. For two nights I simply lay in bed staring at the ceiling feeling every inch of my body ache - particularly in the joints of my legs. The good news is that it eased off and I seem to be fine.

Now the marathon is out there and real. And I can tell you what, I ain't skipping it like the last one I registered for three years ago.

Treadmill run

Distance: n/a
Time: 30 minutes
Surface: treadmill
Weather Conditions: inside
Location: Millennium Sports Club, Miraflores, Lima, Peru
Secret weapon: none

Comments: I planned to be nice to myself today not as any kind of reward or anything but more to get a sense of where I stood physically after my big run this week. I started with the usual stretch/situp regimine and then put it on the treadmill. As usual, my left leg was tighter than the right but there wasn't anything dangerous showing up in the warm up.

On the machine I put it at a 9-minute-mile pace and kept it there for the full half hour. It was a really simple run. A good steady pace. No tiredness or urge to cut it short. Just get on the machine and crank it out. In fact I really felt like I had plenty left in the tank to keep going. But I am not going to screw up and make a real mistake at this point.

Long Run

Distance: 17.75 kilometers (11 miles)
Time: two hours
Surface: asphalt/concrete
Weather Conditions: sunny, cool, 70s, late afternoon run
Location: Miraflores and Barranco, Lima, Peru
Secret weapon: 28 Days Later soundtrack

Comments: Well, I was a little disappointed with myself for flaking out this week yet again. So I skipped the stretch and situps and went right out onto the pavement. My only goal, initally, was to run the full clifftop circuit once, which I figured to be about an hour and a half. I got into a good pace, felt relatively strong so I decided to tack on the extra half hour.

It went pretty well, I kept a respectable pace and didn't develop any real problems but oh boy, it was not easy. At about the 80 minute mark I knew it would be a close thing to accomplish, and it was. I had to dig inside and find the old one-leg-in-front-of-the-other running monster that I used to be.

Needless to say, I was pretty sore and pretty tired afterward. I doubt I will be back on the road before Friday. If nothing else I need to care for my first training blisters. Now there's a running milestone for you.
