Port Orleans French Quarter Beignet Dash 5K

Race: Port Orleans French Quarter Beignet Dash 5K
Watch Time: 33:50
Official Time: N/A
Pace: 10:20 min/mi

Comments: When we booked our Christmastime vacation at Walt Disney World earlier this year we made staying at the Port Orleans French Quarter for at least part of the trip a priority. A big reason for that was the Beignet Dash.

For several years, this resort has offered a Sunday morning fun run through the two Port Orleans properties. The total course is about a mile and a half. At the end, you are rewarded with three enormous beignets. More recently, they have added a commemorative button and Mardi Gras bead "medal."

Total cost of all this is $15. Which is insanely cheap when it comes to Disney.

So we got up early and gave it  a whirl. I put on my Goofy finisher shirt because you are damn right I did.

The run was really as pleasant as advertised. Maybe two dozen folks showed up for it. They had bibs for the runners and a little starting queue. Of course there were a number of kids who took off like a shot when it started. They slowed down soon enough, of course.

We did the course and I then went back and did another lap to make it a 5K. Since I did the first one slow, I let myself push it a bit on the second but nothing crazy. It was a great little workout and everyone involved was a delight to deal with.

Afterwards we got our beignets. I was very pleasantly surprised how good they were. Typically you get a powdered sugar doughnut but these were legitimate beignets. They didn't go halfway with the powdered sugar either. I had it all over myself by the time I got done. So points for verisimilitude.

Fitness Run

Distance: 6.27 miles
Time: 1:03:45
Pace: 10:10 min/mi

Comments: This is the last day before a rather nasty cold front pushes through North Texas. So I took advantage of the ideal conditions this morning to get a 10K in. The run went really well and I was very encouraged by the effort.

I didn't look at my watch the whole way and the pace came out slightly slower than I might have hoped. Basically, this run was about cadence and consistency. For the most part, I think I did that.

I also did myself a favor and doubled back on the flat portion, not the hills. As a result, I had more in the tank than usual on the last few uphills. Again, instead of cranking it, I just tried to keep a solid consistent effort and (mostly) succeeded.

I might be able to squeeze in a run tomorrow morning that won't be awful but, after that, it's sub-freezing training.

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.03 miles
Time: 40:53
Pace: 10:09 min/mi

Comments: A quick lunch run on a pretty warm fall day. I pushed things pretty hard earlier this week so I didn't want to overdo it today. The warmer weather helped keep things in check.

My cadence was pretty strong to start and the first two miles were pretty solid. Then I got a little sloppy on the second half, fading pretty hard on the final hills. That was a bit disappointing given how well I handled them earlier this week.

It's been nice to crank out four straight days but my legs need the rest.

Tuesday, November 5, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.04 miles
Time: 42:42
Pace: 10:35 min/mi

Comments: Haven't had a morning run in quite some time so this was a bit unique. Getting woken up and out the door is the chore I recalled but, at least, I didn't have to contend with bitter cold. Temperatures were pretty much ideal today.

No major goals here, just get the thing done. As a result the pace and cadence weren't anything special. The last two miles were pretty much the exact same pace which, with the hills, means I did pretty good on the final bit.

Cold front headed in so I might try and get a fourth day on this streak before it arrives.

Monday, November 4, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.02 miles
Time: 39:25
Pace: 9:48 min/mi

Comments: Lunch run which was a little warmer than expected. I decided to try and push the pace a little today to see how my legs are holding up. The plan was to get a strong cadence on the downhill miles and then just try and keep the pace under 10 min/mi on the uphills.

I pretty much nailed the former but wasn't able to hit the latter. But, since I had such a strong first half, I kept the overall pace under 10 min/mi which was what I was actually hoping to get.

Overall it felt pretty good. I have a long way to go though.

Sunday, November 3, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.05 mi
Time: 40:55
Pace: 10:06 min/mi

Comments: Not particularly happy with the five-day layoff after doing such a good job starting the last week. I didn't want to overdo it with a longer run though. Which can be an issue when the temperature is in the mid-50s. The urge to put the hammer down can be tempting.

Instead, I just focused on cadence. Quick steps the whole way. The first mile was pretty quick but I fell back to the 10 min/mi range for the rest -- lagging significantly on the uphills.

Overall, it went very well and I don't feel like the layoff cost me. But I don't want to have another long pause now I've made real progress.

Tuesday, October 22, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.02 miles
Time: 40:03
Pace: 9:57 min/mi

Comments: Another lunch run. With this effort I've put in six runs in the last seven days. As encouraging as that may be in terms of routine, it's concerning in terms of overdoing it. But my legs seem to be holding up well.

This one started pretty well, I deliberately didn't have any goals or targets setting out. I rode the downhill of the first mile and just tried to keep it steady. But my pace deteriorated significantly every mile.

Still, I finished with a sub-10 min/mi pace which is far better than I would have expected a week ago.

Monday, October 21, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.06 miles
Time: 39:57
Pace: 9:51 min/mi

Comments: Despite the violent overnight storms, conditions were pretty nice again today. A shade warmer than cool but the lower humidity making it much less uncomfortable.

Since I pushed the pace a bit hard yeserday, I made an effort to rein it in somewhat on this effort. The first two miles - pretty much the entirety of the downhill - were overfast but the last two were about what I was looking for.

Worked hard through the hills but they weren't the awful struggle like they have been. Still a ways to go for them to get back to "manageable."

Sunday, October 20, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.03 miles
Time: 38:26
Pace: 9:32 min/mi

Comments: Little later start than I would have liked so the temperatures were a touch on the warm side. Still, pretty much ideal in comparison with the summer runs.

Really focused on cadence for this effort. Just getting short quick steps and  keeping consistent as far as possible. As usual, this kind of fell apart on the last mile with the hills but the whallop was less bad than normal.

Final result was on par with the last run so at least I'm not getting any worse.

Thursday, October 17, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.02 miles
Time: 38:33
Pace: 9:35 min/mi

Comments: Surprised myself and got in another lunch run. The weather cooperated as did my meeting schedule so I decided to take advantage of it. I don't know how much longer either will cooperate.

Started slow but got a good cadence going on the first downhill and just tried to hold it the rest of the way. Did pretty well with that (except for the hills, of course) but the pace varied pretty dramatically anyway.

And I surprised myself with a 20 sec/mi bump in pace. Wild.

Wednesday, October 16, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.03 miles
Time: 39:58
Pace: 9:55 min/mi

Comments: Alright, the cooler weather has arrived and the doctor said I need to get back into it for my better good. There were a pair of afternoon meetings to staff today so I took a long lunch and got a run it.

Of course it was awful. I really just tried to keep the cadence going but there was nothing fancy about the effort. The dramatically cooler temperatures made a huge difference, though. Somehow I kept my overall pace under 10 min/mi.

Sunday, October 6, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.02 miles
Time: 44:11
Pace: 10:59

Comments: This was a slog and a half. The weather is still swealtering and my legs ain't any closer to race ready. I went out with zero expectations and pretty much got what I expected.

The plan was pretty simple, just keep putting one foot in front of the other. At the midway mark I realized I was going to feel awful no matter what so I might as well try and push it a little bit.

The result of the effort didn't really show up in the pace or cadence but it felt like a solid effort.

Tuesday, August 13, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.05 miles
Time: 42:51
Pace: 10:35 min/mi

Comments: I was pretty much wiped out all of Sunday after the hard effort. Taking a rest day after seemed like a good idea since my quads were a bit sore still. I wasn't really jazzed about this morning since my legs were still a bit achy and it's hotter than the bejesus right now.

So I started out slow and let myself speed up a tad when I warmed up but not much. It went well enough to the halfway mark and then I really had to fight the urge to cut it short. I stuck with it to the end but there was nothing pretty about this one.

Sunday, August 11, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.04
Time: 39:29
Pace: 9:46 min/mi

Comments: With  the two day rest and comparatively decent weather conditions (humidity wasn't as bad) I decided to push it a little this morning.

- Goal 1: focus on cadence
- Goal 2: sub 30 min three miles
- Goal 3: sub 40 minute run

Surprisingly, I hit all three of them. I focused on cadence first, trying to get a bit of a lead on the clock with the downhill. Splitwise, it didn't work out that way but it did warm me up and I got into a strong rhythm for the middle two miles.

I hit the second goal with about a minute to spare so I really focused on the cadence on the big hill. Then I pushed the pace a bit on that last 200 yards or so after the last hill. Overall, a very satisfying effort.

Friday, August 9, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.03 miles
Time: 40:21
Pace: 10:01 min/mi

Comments: Up early but truly did not want to step out the door. Somehow I got the shoes on and managed it. The start was pretty unpleasant and I was resigned to another slog-through-it effort.

After the first mile, though, I warmed up and actually got into a little rhythm. The middle two miles went really well and the stats and splits were actually respectable. Not anywhere near back in full form, but respectable.

The hills on the final mile were rough, as always. But, even then, I felt better powering through them.

Tuesday, August 6, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.04 miles
Time: 42:05
Pace: 10:24 min/mi

Comments: Finally able to get up early enough to have the time for a morning run. Of course the heat has really started so now it's as awful as it was mid-day a week ago. Still, the only goal is get it done so out the door I went.

This run was not pleasant by any stretch but, arguably, less brutal than the ones last week. I played around a little bit with cadence but I really don't have the energy to do more than just keep moving.

Also swallowed a bug. That was fun.

Sunday, August 4, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.04 miles
Time: 43:47
Pace: 10:51 min/mi

Comments: Pretty much the same lineup as each run the past few days; heat, humidity and hills. But today had the added delight of exhaustion. My legs felt burn just walking outside to get started and didn't get any livelier over the course of the run.

These have been really crude efforts. Just slogging through it and focusing on getting it completed. I was semi-staggering at the halfway mark and the big hills were sheer torture. Didn't walk today, though.

On the upside, I again managed to find the window between heavier rains. The light drizzle couldn't really match the amount I was sweating anyway.

Saturday, August 3, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.05 miles
Time: 42:24
Pace: 10:27 min/mi

Comments: So instead of brutal sun, I decided to go with oppressive humidity today. And, what the hell, throw in some light rain at the end to make it that much more miserable.

My legs were a bit sore this morning and I seriously considered not doing this run due to the intermittent rainstorms. Finally, I just decided to do it since it looked like there wouldn't be any intense downpours, just rain.

Anyhow. It was a messy slog but I managed to get it done.

Friday, August 2, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.05 miles
Time: 42:29
Pace: 10:29 min/mi

Comments: Heat, Humidity, Hills. Ugh.

Got paid today so spent the morning sorting that out. Despite the heat, I convinced myself doing a mid-day run would help with acclimating to the heat. I just had to take it slow. Ugh.

Maybe. Just maybe if it had been overcast, I could have pulled it off. By the halfway point I was sweating hard and halfway up the big hill I had to stop and walk it. At the end I was drenched in sweat and wiped out.

Tuesday, July 30, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.03 miles
Time: 41:41
Pace: 10:20 min/mi

Comments: The crisp weather that helped get me motivated to return to running are now well and truly gone. It's the usual North Texas heat and humidity from here on out. Viciously unpleasant but nothing one can do about it but acclimate.

While this was an early effort, the conditions were like a mid-day run last week. With more humidity, of course. The result is yet another sloggy effort. Zero style points. Zero finesse. Just crank it out while sweating my ass off. Still... I got it done.

Sunday, July 28, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.05 miles
Time: 42:31
Pace: 10:30 min/mi

Comments: Took two days off after the three-in-a-row last week. I was determined to get this one in and not lose the little bit of progress I have been able to make. The weather is about to get sweltering awful and I need to have this routine in place.

It wasn't as nice today as recent mornings but it wasn't the full on horroshow it's gonna be. I got a pretty good cadence during the second mile but that didn't translate into a better pace at all. But I didn't suffer as much on the big hill this time so... progress?

Friday, July 26, 2019

New Shoes: Brooks Glycerine 17

I hit 400 miles last week with my workhorse shoes, Saucony Triumph ISO 4, and decided it was time to hang them up. I still have the Brooks Ghost 11, in the closet but, for some reason, I don't wear them that much. They have become my backup/wear around pair and I guess I'm fine with that.

Since I was in Fort Worth last week, I stopped by at the Fort Worth Running Company and tried on a few pairs. The new version of the Saucony Triumph had a ton of room in the toebox and felt a little weird. I opted for the newest version of the Brooks Glycerin instead. I've had a pair of these before and I know they are a solid shoe.

Thursday, July 25, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.04 miles
Time: 42:30
Pace: 10:30 min/mi

Comments: First morning run in quite awhile. I was on the fence about doing this one but the cooler temps and progress this week was too compelling. I laced up and got out the door.

It was pretty much the slog I expected. My legs are beat and I haven't really eaten well at all this week. But I had zero interest in style points, just getting the miles in. The hills on the second half were pretty rough, though. I'm not upset at all about a day off tomorrow.

Wednesday, July 24, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.05
Time: 42:28
Pace: 10:29

Comments: The relatively cool but remarkably dry weather is holding so I took a chance on a lunchtime run. It was hot but only about as awful as my conditioning made it. Another 10% or so of humidity would have been an issue and another 10% past that would be dangerous.

This whole run was an exercise in staying distracted just to get it over and done with. There was nothing fancy or special about it at all. I don't think I suffered quite as much on the big hill as I did yesterday - but that a matter of degree, not kind.

Tuesday, July 23, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.01
Time: 41:48
Pace: 10:26

Comments: The week from hell pretty much squished any effort to follow up on last Tuesday's run. The morning from hell today offered an opportunity to get one in. Well, that and a cold front that made is moderately less hellish.

I went a bit faster but certainly not picking up any style points along the way. It was not a complete slog. Let's call it slog-ish. Sloggy-like. Anyway, I got it done. With a little luck, I'll try and get another in shortly.

Tuesday, July 16, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.05 miles
Time: 47:10
Pace: 11:39 min/mi

Comments: A two month hiatus wasn't what I exactly planned but it worked out that way. In retrospect, this was probably for the better given the sheer number of miles I've run in the last 18 months without significant injury was just unsustainable.

Now I get to revel in the joy of coming back from deconditioning completely. Great.

It was hot. It was humid. I was slow. Soooooooo slow. Not really a surprise though. I just got going and cranked it out. A lot of dissociative running, I'll tell you that.

Monday, May 13, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.01 miles
Time: 39:32
Pace: 9:51 min/mi

Comments: A brush with a sinus infection derailed my effort last week to get back into the swing of things. So I'm hoping to get a solid set of run in this week and put myself back on track.

This run was reasonably nice if a bit warm. The pollen laid into me when I got done, though. No real aim except finishing without running myself down. In that respect, I got it in a little faster than I expected and the heart rate showed it. Gonna have to pace it better going forward.

Thursday, May 9, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.03 miles
Time: 40:31
Pace: 10:04 min/mi

Comments: Another week layoff. Now I am seriously behind on the year goal. The only way to get back on track will be instituting the regular morning run like I did last summer. So, no time like today...

I thought that with the storms and front pushing through yesterday, this would be a clear morning but it was the complete opposite. Misty to the point of actual rain. But pretty cool, so it wasn't too awful.

Just focused on cadence. Finished much better than I had any reason to expect.

Wednesday, May 1, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.04 miles
Time: 38:17
Pace: 9:29 min/mi

Comments: So I took a full week off running. There were a lot of reasons, not the least being the onset of pollengeddon. Turns out the danger isn't over as it whipped my ass today.

It is now getting into that delightful mix of heat and humidity that Texas does so well. Right now it's like this at the middle of the day. Soon enough it'll be like this before dawn.

This was a sloppy, just-get-it-done effort. I got it done.

Tuesday, April 23, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.02 miles
Time: 38:23
Pace: 9:32 min/mi

Comments: Ran this one angry after my neighbor's yap dog kept me up all fucking night. Probably not the smartest move given the heat and humidity today. But this is gonna be par for the course in the mornings over the summer. So I might as well get used to it.

Ran the first part way too fast. Slowed down a little on the second half just from the slog. Heart rate was in Zone five almost half this effort. Not ideal. I'm expecting to be a little sore from this one as a result.

Monday, April 22, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.03 mi
Time: 39:47
Pace: 9:52 min/mi

Comments: After multiple days off I finally got back out there for a run. Toward the end of last week, I was feeling really run down. That was very evident on my the run on Tuesday. I was feeling better toward the end of the week but just decided to give myself the extended rest anyway.

Now I would like to get a number of back-to-back runs in but with very easy efforts. Today was about idea for that. I started overslow, picked up the cadence in the middle but without pushing the effort. At the end, my heart rate was almost entirely in Zone 4 even with the warmer and more humid conditions.

Tuesday, April 16, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.03 miles
Time: 40:28
Pace: 10:03 min/mi

Comments: Not sure what the specific cause was, but today's run sucked pretty damn hard. It was a slog from start to finish and I felt wiped out by the halfway point.

My pace was abysmal to start and slowed precipitously on the last two miles. Cadence was a similar mess. But my heart rate, which I expected to be pegged to the maximum was pretty good. Half of the run in Zone 4 and half in Zone 3. None in Zone 5. Whatever.

Monday, April 15, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4 miles
Time: 36:45
Pace: 9:12 min/mi

Comments: Skipped the long run over the weekend again. At some point I have got to get those back into the mix. For now, I'm still on my mileage target without them but that's not optimum for conditioning.

As a result, I probably ran this one a bit on the quick side. But the temperature was good and humidity ideal. So might as well. My heart rate was right where I would want it for this kind of effort. That's not likely to be the case if I keep pushing it like this, though.

Friday, April 12, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.05
Time: 37:47
Pace: 9:19 min/mi

Comments: Fifth day in a row. The decent weather had a lot to do with that. And the ability to cut away for mid-day runs. But it was a nice streak after so many erratic efforts.

Really nice day today. Perfect temps. Low humidity. Pollen not unbearably brutal. As a result, I probably did this a bit quicker than necessary but the exertion -- going by heart rate -- was pretty much perfect. An excellent end to the workout week.

Thursday, April 11, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.04 miles
Time: 37:35
Pace: 9:18 min/mi

Comments: Another lunch run. On the plus side, temperatures are significantly cooler today. On the negative side, pollen is brutal. Rain is in the forecast and I rarely have welcomed it so gladly.

This was a little faster than yesterday and felt much more pleasant as well. That could be due to the temperatures and cloud cover. Spent about a fifth of the run in the Zone 5 heart rate. That's about the kind of effort I'm looking for at this point.

Wednesday, April 10, 2019

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.04 miles
Time: 38:14
Pace: 9:27 min/mi

Comments: With everything going in fits and starts this morning, I decided to cut out early and get the run in. There's a forecast of summer-like temperatures and, even worse, strong winds. So I wanted to take advantage of the spring-like conditions while they lasted.

From my heart rate, you would think this was a super strong effort but that wasn't the case. I kept a good cadence but felt a little sluggish the whole way. It could be just fatigue from multiple days running but it could be I'm coming down with something. The latter not an uncommon issue with me this time of year.

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.05 miles
Time: 38:13
Pace: 9:26 min/mi

Comments: Although the intent was a pre-work run, I made a gametime decision to go with a lunch run. That was despite predictions of pretty warm temperatures. It was warm, but the lower humidity actually made it pretty pleasant.

My pace was pretty good and, looking at heart rate, I wasn't pushing as hard as I had to yesterday. The cadence was really strong throughout as well. It got a little sweaty and unpleasant at the end but not nearly as bad as it's gonna get in a month or so.

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.02 miles
Time: 39:17
Pace: 9:46 min/mi

Comments: Was really unmotivated yesterday and didn't feel too good as well. I decided to forego the planned long run and make it a recovery day. Which is another way of saying I slacked off but anyway.

Woke up stupid early and was pretty determined to get the pre-work run in. The temperature was almost perfect, which was demonstrated by the sheer number of runners I passed in the dark.

Felt pretty good the whole way. Heart rate was higher than I expected with that kind of performance, actually.

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.04 miles
Time: 39:53
Pace: 9:52 min/mi

Comments: Meant to run before work. Didn't happen. Wanted to get out before noon. Nope. After work on a Friday is a non-starter. So a post-lunch effort in the heat was the only other option. Wonderful.

The heat has started to climb a bit and it was very noticeable with the sun out today. The humidity was less brutal than it is going to be in a month or so but it was not a pushover either. I was sweating pretty good at the end.

According to the heart rate, I had to work a bit harder on this one but I wasn't pegged in the high range the whole way either.

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.04 miles
Time: 37:55
Pace: 9:24 min/mi

Comments: Had the time to get the run in this morning but chose to get some personal finance shit done instead. It was in the mid-70s and rather humid by the time I got back to the house to get this effort completed.

The weather made it feel like a bit of a slog but my heart rate was positively chipper the whole way. only a fraction of the time was in Zone 5 and a good third of it was in Zone 3. Not sure if that's due to the rest day or what.

Fitness Run

Distance: 4.04 miles
Time: 38:00
Pace: 9:25 min/mi

Comments: A little less chilly but I still decided to make it a lunch run and avoid the worst of it. Turned out to be a pretty gorgeous day so I'm rather glad I did. Everything else is going to hell so at least I've got that.

A bit tough to start and I did try and slow it down some. Cadence increased the whole way up to when the hills started. The heart rate was much better as well. Less than 20% of the run in Zone 5. At the end I felt pretty good overall.
