Training Run

Comments: Got out at lunch which was earlier than I expected given the forecast. Temperatures dropped into the 20s this morning but recovered reasonably nicely by mid-morning. Not gonna lie, it was still brisk out there.

I cranked this one out a little faster than I intended. I felt pretty good though so I let the pace creep up as I went along. Heart rate stayed out of Zone 5 completely so that seems to have been the right choice.

The intent was to get eight miles but I cut it to four after considering next week's schedule. I want to get three runs in during the week which means a back-to-back one today and tomorrow.

Training Run

Comments: The goal of this effort was to start my pre-work run routine. While I'm doubtful I can manage full-on marathon training with my new schedule, I'm determined to get in regular runs to maintain my fitness. That means early morning pavement.

It was a little chilly but not too cold today. Since my legs still feel some stiffness from the races, I again focused on cadence and taking it easy. There were no real issues before, during or after this workout so I'm hoping that means my recovery is progressing well.

Training Run

Comments: Took two days off after the race to recover a bit. Felt pretty good on day three so took off for a very easy four mile run. Weather was a little chilly at the start but warmed up very nicely over the course of the effort.

The run went well. I started a little stiff but loosened up quickly and felt good the rest of the way. Yes, I was going super slow and easy but that's not bad for doing 40 miles the weekend prior. I will take tomorrow off and try and get another one of these in on Friday.

Walt Disney World Marathon

Comments: Needless to say, I was pretty apprehensive as I got ready to start this race effort.

As much as I tried to stay off my feet and rest after the half marathon, it was still clear my legs were pretty tired the next morning. The one bit of good news was there were no injury-type aches lurking about.

The weather forecast wasn't favorable either. Temperatures were expected to get into the upper 70s with very high humidity right about the time I was expected to be doing the final 10K or so of the race. My plan was to hydrate a lot early on.

I got up, out the door and on the bus with no problem. Knowing the routine certainly made the pre-race process easier. Got to the start, headed to the corral and sat down to conserve whatever energy I had to spare. After an hour they let us go.

For the first five miles or so I ran slow as I possibly could. Not as slow as during the half marathon but as much as three minutes slower than my race pace. Tons of people passed me and, as I continued along, I felt pretty good about my chances of catching them on the second half of the course.

Although I felt pretty hydrated, I made myself take two cups of water at every drink station. The hope was that I could maintain my hydration levels over the cool miles and give myself a better chance when the heat came on.

I let myself enjoy the run through the Magic Kingdom a bit more this time. The downside of heavy hydration was needing bathroom breaks. I took advantage of the ones in the parks I could starting at this point.

The next section going to Animal Kingdom went pretty well. It was interior service roads so lots of room and shade. The couple of photo stops I wanted were along here as well so I had fun with those while I still felt pretty good.

As Animal Kingdom, and the halfway point, approached I was feeling pretty optimistic. I was starting to pass a lot of runners so I figured I was in pretty good shape in comparison. The park was fun to run through but a lot more up-and-down than I expected.

The plan was to start pumping up the pace as my legs could handle following the halfway point. I started to play with that but it was clear my legs were pretty tired. As we left the park and did a big circuit around the parking lot, the sun hit us for the first time and I knew the best-case-scenario wasn't going to happen.

From that point I made an effort to stay in the shade wherever I could find it but the rising temperatures were unavoidable. I was still double cupping at the water stations but that didn't help the growing fatigue in my legs any. As ESPN's Wide World of Sports approached the real test of the final portions became clear; wide open and sloping roadways.

The sun was a beast now and the long open roadways let it beat down without mercy. The gradual uphills to the overpasses were brutal, sapping whatever energy I had left. The circuit through Wide World of Sports was a bit of a relief with the shade and softer surfaces but the toll of the race was clear at the 20 mile mark. The last 10K would be a struggle.

And it was. I was now at the point where every step was physically uncomfortable through my entire legs. I was trying to focus on cadence to conserve energy but found myself shuffling more often than I liked. The access ramps on the way to Hollywood Studios were nightmarish to ascend and the downhills after offered little relief.

The final four miles were a real struggle. The temptation to stop running and walk the rest of the way was enormous. And the sun was so bright I found myself partially blinded and having trouble avoiding obstacles at times. Entering Epcot I actually dreaded the World Showcase portion of the course and found myself walking at least half of it to get over the inclines it offered.

I got it together and did the final half mile at the best pace I could. The slow, shuffling run wasn't pretty but I didn't walk over the finish line. Somehow, despite stacking the odds against myself, I finished the race-and-a-half challenge. I'm not planning on trying it again. Ever.

Walt Disney World Half Marathon

Comments: I certainly had the best of intentions when I signed up for the Goofy Challenge last summer. A back-to-back half marathon and marathon made some sort of sense as I trained for my first full in a few years. The languid training I did after that event was much less smart on my part.

The plan was to run the half with my girlfriend who was doing her first one. My hope was the reduced pace would help me control the fatigue and conserve energy for the full marathon the next day. That was the plan, anyway.

One thing we expected but really weren't ready for was the sheer size of the event. The sheer number of runners along with the logistics of running things on the WDW property was intimidating to experience. Pretty much from the 2:30 a.m. wakeup, you are in a confusing mass of humanity trying to figure out what is going on.

Eventually we got to the correct corral and waited. It took about an hour to get things into place and the race to begin. Then it was 20 minutes of staged starts before we could cross the starting line at about 6 a.m.

From there it was just keeping a steady pace and trying to enjoy the experience. After a few miles the race went through the main toll plaza and there were plenty of distractions to keep one occupied. A couple miles later was the portion down Main Street U.S.A. in the Magic Kingdom -- a portion of the course that very much lives up to the hype.

After the Magic Kingdom, the course follows access roads to get back to Epcot. These are a little on the mundane side and the distance started taking a toll on my girlfriend. Her conditioning held but a nagging ankle issue decided to make itself known.

The result were some walking as we approached Epcot, particularly on the inclines from the overpasses. The Epcot portion was disappointingly short and almost entirely in backstage areas. Not the most magical miles of the race.

My girlfriend hit a full run the last section but I held back knowing I had a lot of work ahead of me in 24 hours. Overall, the race went well and I felt pretty positive going into the full.

Comments: Welp. It's race week. And I'm not even remotely close to being ready for it. There is nothing I can do at this point to improve the ordeal in front of me but I can at least put in a few runs so I'm not completely a mess after the first race.

I was thinking about doing eight miles today but there really isn't any real benefit it would give me. And it's pretty nice weather so the unrestrained dogs and kids on the loose aren't worth the hassle. This was a decent four miles and about what I needed to feel a little better about things.

Comments: Not bad for the first run of the year. I haven't put on my running shoes since Christmas Day and, in that context, this run went better than I could have expected. But I'm not feeling in peak condition as raceday rapidly approaches.

It was cold all day so I wasn't in any hurry to get out there. As the afternoon drew on, it kept getting darker and colder so I finally had to bite the bullet and get it done. It was very unpleasant at the start and I never really fell into a groove.

That said, it was not a bad overall effort. I wasn't comfortable but I wasn't having a horrible time of it either. The next effort probably will be a better barometer of how my legs are really doing.

Training Run

Comments: Christmas Day run. It was damn cold this morning but a ton of sun made it feel a lot warmer by mid-morning. So, what the hell. I put my hat and gloves and decided to get it done.

It was not a lot of fun the first couple miles but my legs felt warm enough so I kept it moving. When I got really warmed up I felt good enough to tack on an extra two miles onto the effort. There were a few problematic hills after that but I just focused on cadence and cranked them out.

Training Run

Comments: The intention of doing 12 miles was well enough but didn't come to pass. I think I could have done it well enough but the route I was on really had me anxious. It was a tight winding road with cars going way too fast. I got four miles out and decided I had taken enough chances for one day and turned around.

I felt pretty good actually. Ran a little fast due to the temperature and anxiety about traffic though and you could tell by the heart rate measure. Still, my legs felt good even with the six miles yesterday.
